Vulcan Bomber
'The Avro Vulcan' was a 'Strategic Bomber' which was operated by the 'Royal Air Force' from 1956 - 1984. The Vulcan Bomber was the backbone of the United Kingdom's airborne 'Nuclear Deterrent' during the 'Cold War'.
Falklands War
The Vulcan was armed with 'Nuclear Weapons', however, the aircraft could also carry out conventional bombing missions too. The Vulcan played an important role in the 'Falklands War' between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982. The bombing mission was called 'Black Buck' The Vulcan successfully bombed the runway at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, this stopped the Argentinian aircraft from taking off or landing. The Vulcan Bomber was dangerously low on fuel against all the odds they flew 'On A Wing And A Prayer' and reached the air tanker aircraft to refuel in the air which allowed them to return to base.
Adaption
The aircraft had no defensive weaponry and relied on high-speed altitude flight to avoid interception. In the mid-1960s the Vulcan was adapted which allowed the aircraft to change to a low-level tactical flight.
In the 1970s 'Nine Vulcans were adapted further for 'Maritine' for radio and reconnaissance operations.
In the final years of the Vulcan's service, six aircraft were converted to the 'K2 Tanker Configuration' for aerial refuelling. This was crucial for the Vulcan to be able to play a role in the ' Falklands War'.
Spirit Of Wales
After retirement, the Vulcan Bomber was named 'The Spirit Of Great Britain 'and was restored to use in display flights until October 2015.
At the end of August 2015 ', The Vulcan Bomber' visited 'The Rhyl Air Show' which was the last flight in Wales. The Welsh people took the 'Vulcan Bomber into their hearts and changed the title to 'The Spirit Of Wales'.
